The rest that we had last night paid off as all of us were able to wake up refreshed and ready for the activities and singing ahead of us. Our day started at 7:30 am with breakfast. We then went to our classrooms and waited until the students arrived. There were 14 of them, an even ratio of boys to girls, with ages ranging from 13 to 25. All the students traveled by train or bus from long distances during he night and arrived at the center this morning. After a short worship time led by Tim Kim, the teachers briefly introduced ourselves. We split the students up by gender. Lily/Amy tested the girls while Eugene/Ernie tested the boys. (Two more girls will join the group tomorrow.)
We showed the students a brief video lesson on proper posture and also on singing with proper tone. Amy taught them beats and measures. We then broke off into gender groups to learn our respective parts to three songs, In His Time, Do Lord, and Lamb of God. Even though the students did not have any formal training in singing, they progressed quickly in learning the notes and were able to sing the songs well. In the coming days we hope that they will become confident enough to sing the songs on their own without the aid of the teachers singing with them in the background.
The weather in Bangalore is hot with temperatures in the 90s and relatively humid. Although the classrooms have a fan and the benefit of the gentle breeze from the windows, it is still quite warm due to being in a concrete building. It is actually cooler outside in the shade. And because of the heat it is easy for the teachers to get tired.
In the mid afternoon, Eugene led a couple of games and icebreakers to help everyone get to know each other better and build on team dynamics. Afterwards, we rested for a couple of hours before dinner. Following dinner, we ended the night with Tim giving his testimony and group devotions. To better prepare the students to share their faith, Tim wants each vocal group to lead the evening sharing time by giving their own testimonies and also sharing a song or a skit if time allows.
After devotions, we ended the night and the teachers debriefed about their day and shared any concerns they had.
Prayer requests:
Health and energy during the day. The days are full so it is easy to get tired and drained from teaching and leading the songs. Amy and Eugene are not feeling well. Pray that they will get a good nights sleep and feel better in the morning.
Pray that the students will have a positive attitude and be encouraged to learn the music and to sing with confidence.
