{FECA Vision Choir} Prayer Update 7

This morning we were greeted with cooler temperatures thanks to the rain and thunderstorms from the night before. The thunder here is pretty strong. With every flash of lightning there is a loud crack of thunder that rattles the windows.

All the students showed up to breakfast wearing their Vision polo shirts. The teachers and Tim wore Indian clothing that is traditionally worn to celebrate special occasions. Tim selected the shirts for the men and had the women's outfits measured to personally fit Lily and Amy. After breakfast, we all walked 15 minutes to Kotumba, a home for handicapped women. This was the place where we held the closing ceremony and graduation. Kotumba helps the women maintain a healthy and productive life and also gives them a job making jute bags (which were given to the students and teachers) and other items.  At the entrance of the home, colorful tile is inlaid in the cement floor to form an ornate sapling with branches and leaves which is the trademark of Kotumba. The entrance also has an open courtyard with a stage for the choir to sing.

The graduation ceremony was well planned out. We sang five songs and Tim presented his vision and hope that the choir ministry would grow and be able to make a greater impact touring various cities in India and spreading the gospel to the unreached. On an personal level, the school served to help each student realize their untapped potential and give them hope that with God they could achieve anything that they set their heart and mind to. A lot of them came to the school without any training in singing and after a few days were able to sing 10 different songs. Usually it would take a group of singers many days to sing as many songs. The teachers then passed out the certificates to their students and the rest of the time was spent taking group photos, selfies, talking and enjoying the cakes, crackers and coffee.

We then made our way back to the center and then sent both sets of students off to their homes.

The schedule for the next two days will be more relaxed. For Sunday, Tim will preach at New Life church where the teachers will sing a couple of songs. On Monday, the team may go out and do some sightseeing or light shopping in the afternoon before they leave to fly back to Los Angeles at night.

Here are pictures of the altos and basses.  Note that there are two guys (I guess their voice has not changed yet) singing with the altos.  There are supposed to be only two tenors but this picture shows Ernie singing with three tenors?

{FECA Vision Choir} Prayer Update 6

We did it! We finally taught all 10 songs to the students ending with "The Lord Bless You and Keep You" and "O, That Will Be Glory"; the latter being my personal favorite because of the way it was written. It is hard to describe but once you hear it you realize that it has three different melodys each with its own distinct notes and lyrics. And there are sections in the song where the men and women sing different notes and lyrics at the same time, yet as a whole the notes and lyrics complement each other making the song sound that much more full and complete.

A couple of minor health issues arose with a couple of our students.  So both of them could not attend part of the class but they eventually joined everyone later in the day.

Eugene gave a comprehensive review of all the material/music theory that would be on the exam. The exam wasn't meant to be a graded test nor did we require the students to pass it. It merely served as a tool for the students to measure their understanding and knowledge of music theory so that they would know the parts that they were strong in and for them to sharpen up on areas that they were weak in. After the exam, each student graded their own test and kept it for their own reference.

The tenors performed for the last evening session. Ernie shared a little bit on the importance of serving and also played the song Lion And The Lamb with one of the students playing backup on the electric guitar. A couple of students gave their testimonies which were powerful and stressed on keeping God the main thing in our lives and also living with desperate faith. They also sang three worship songs in their native tongue.

Launching the sky lanterns proved to be quite a challenge since we had thunderstorms with rain falling in varied intervals. It was also windy which prevented the lanterns from filling with hot air and also ascending into the sky on a clean upward trajectory. You can use your imagination to see what it would like. A handful of the lanterns were finally able to take flight and it was pretty cool to see them float in the air.

The teachers ended the night with a debriefing meeting and we went over the comments that the students had about the class. They all had positive experiences from the choir teaching and expressed their thanks and enjoyment in being able to participate in this opportunity.

We have a big day tomorrow since we will be singing 5 songs in front of an audience of approximately 40 local church leaders, family members and friends. It will be sad to see the students leave but they will be leaving with so many good memories and also the tools and motivation for them to start their own choir ministry at their church.

Prayer Requests:

  1. Pray that the students will have enough rest and sing well tomorrow for their final performance and graduation ceremony.
  2. Pray that the audience especially the local church leaders be inspired and see value in providing the support that is needed for the choir ministry to grow and thrive at the local level.

{FECA Vision Choir} Prayer Update 5

Our trip to the orphanage took about 90 minutes and led us through the many streets of Bangalore. All of us were able to squeeze in a medium size bus and we were grateful that it had a functioning air conditioner. There was a lot of traffic in the morning and part of the reason why is that there are probably only a few main roads through the city. Everybody uses them and the streets are not wide. Most people get around town riding scooters since it is easier to weave in and out of traffic.  Most of the side streets are not paved so we had a very bumpy ride on parts of our journey.

The orphanage had around 40-50 children with ages ranging from 4 to 13 years of age. They were quite happy to see us and greeted us loudly with cheerful "Hi's" and bright smiles. They were all well behaved and listened quietly as Vision sang 'Lamb of God' and 'Keepin' in touch'. We then had lunch and then spent the next hour playing games. There was plenty of things to do from singing, dancing, soccer and other group games. We finished the time taking group photos and taking photos with the kids. They were really touched that we came and asked if we planned to see them tomorrow. Unfortunately, we could not but I told them that the large Vision team would visit them next month in June. It was obvious that they don't get many visitors and not much interaction with young adults but Tim is planning to change that by having teachers make periodic visits to teach them music and also to play with them.

Our journey back took over 2 hours because the bus broke down.  Apparently some electrical wires got crossed which caused the engine to overheat. Tim made a few phone calls and was about to arrange for a group of Uber taxis to pick us up when suddenly the driver was able to restart the bus and we were able to resume our journey back home.

After resting for an hour at the Centre, we practiced a few of the songs then took a 2 hour break before dinner.  Dinner was a treat since we got to have naan, fried tandoori chicken, curry, rice and a side of yogurt sauce. The Centre hosted a wedding and I think that was why our meal was particularly special since we probably ate some of the food that was served at the wedding.

The alto group hosted a really good evening program. They were the largest group and thus was able to sing 3 songs, share one testimony and also perform a skit on the importance of having Jesus in your life.

Tomorrow's evening program will end with a treat since we will be launching sky lanterns into the air!

Prayer Requests:

  1. Continue to pray for Eugene since he sometimes has a scratchy throat and at times feels a little sick. He is still taking the NyQuil which Tim gave him.
  2. Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day of practice and hopefully there is enough time for the students to learn two more songs: The Lord Bless You and Keep You, and O That Will Be.

{FECA Vision Choir} Quick update from Lily

Mari, thank you for your encouragement!

We sang for the children's home and played with them afterwards. It made think of the youth center we went in Hualian last year in Taiwan. It was very touching to have sung for them and being with them.

For today, we will likely be reviewing the 8 songs learned, and not teaching new ones.

Day 5: teaching O That Will Be: The Lord bless You, (maybe Just a Closer Walk)

Day 6: Tim has arranged a mini concert with 20-30 people in attendance in the morning. A graduation ceremony to follow. Students homeward bound afterwards.

Thank you.  The googlegroups address worked fine.

The piano accompaniments that Mari Salli recorded for each song have been great and very helpful since we don't have a pianist and when we sing as a full choir all the teachers are busy singing with the students or conducting the song.  We have used the recordings for 3 or 4 songs and we will use them tomorrow (Thursday morning) when we go to the orphanage at Whitefield. Apparently the city is called Whitefield because many years ago a lot of the foreigners (white people) used to live there. Tim has chartered a bus to take all the students and teachers to visit the orphanage that Serving Foundation International supports. It will give everyone a chance to play and bless the children there.

Tim has been a good supporter encouraging the students and also the teachers each day by informing them of the progress we have made, reminding us of the prayer support that we have been receiving back home and also the positive impact and feedback he has received from the students.

The students had a lot of fun playing charades during the team dynamics session. They never played the game before so they were very excited as expected and sometimes rushed through the actions and movements.

The bass group led tonight's sharing session. They did a great job singing 2 Hindi worship songs and one also gave their testimony which was a good story on their journey through life's struggles with family illness, poverty, hope in God and perseverance in getting through it. The students' gifts and talents really shine through at this time. We would never have known or been blessed by their gifts and talents in playing the electric guitar or singing in their native tongue (which they do amazingly well).

Prayer Requests:

  1. Health and energy for the team, in particular for Amy and Eugene, who have been feeling tired due to teaching the songs and singing. Teaching the songs puts more stress on the vocal chords of the teachers. Amy has a mild headache and Eugene still suffers from a scratchy throat in the morning.
  2. A praise report: Lily's voice has held up really well. She was afraid that she would hurt her vocal chords teaching music but her voice has been well. Thanks for your prayers.
  3. Good bonding time with the students. We only have a few days left with the students here since they leave for home Saturday late morning and early afternoon. Pray that we will take more initiative to get to know all the students better. Sometimes it is easy to focus on just a few within our section but then we don't pay attention to those outside our section.
  4. Productive time. We only have Thursday afternoon and Friday morning to learn 2 or 3 more songs. In addition, the students have an exam they need to take on Friday so they will need time to study for it. Saturday is reserved for the graduation ceremony for the kids and will be the last time they will perform together as a group.

{FECA Vision Choir} Update 3

Today's report from Ernie.

Here is a fun fact. I think out of all the meals we eat during the day, breakfast is probably our favorite as it offers a good mix of Indian and Western dishes from curries, Indian breads, toast, eggs, cereal, and pancakes. Fresh papaya and fresh fruit juice are prepared daily, too.

The place we are staying is called SAIACS CEO Centre (www.saiacsceocentre.com). It is a large conference center and serves as host to other Christian youth groups and also provides classrooms for a local bible college. Throughout the day we see other Christian groups have their social activities and programs here and there is at least one theology class in session. Each of our bedrooms do have air conditioning and are nicely furnished so the large Vision team when they do come to Bangalore will have a suitable place to stay.

As in our normal daily schedule, we started the day with morning devotions led by Eugene and watched videos from the Vocal Coach which focused on proper breathing techniques and posture. Amy led lessons on reading music, notes and scales. We then broke off in our sections to learn our vocal parts. After each section learned enough of their songs we would reconvene as a larger group with Lily leading everyone in singing the songs. Tim was not with us in the morning sessions since he was out meeting with other pastors from different churches, but he joined us later in the afternoon and evening sessions.

There are very small inconveniences here and there but nothing that is too difficult. At times the power cuts off while we are teaching so we have to continue without lights or fans but we don't let that stop us and continue with our singing.

During the afternoon session, Eugene led the group in a couple of games. It is interesting and fun to see how the students react to playing the games that we enjoy back at home. To the Indian students, the games are novel and new. So when they first experience the games they all start laughing and express a lot of joy in seeing how everyone reacts to various actions in the games (like boom chika boom boom boom boom and others). Tomorrow we will play charades and I think the students will get a kick out of it.

I'm surprised by how quickly our team has adjusted to the time change as none of us went to sleep during the 2 hour break before dinner this Tuesday evening. But perhaps that is because of all the prayers that we have received from everyone back home. So instead of resting, the team planned the next days lesson. Lily, as the team lead, has been in charge of scheduling the order of songs that we sing each day based upon the difficulty of each song, including the video presentations and music theory.

For the evening session, the sopranos led the sharing time and it was impressive. They sang two songs and two girls gave their testimonies. Everyone enjoyed the life stories that the two girls shared. Although they had hard difficult childhoods and didn't grow up in Christian homes, God was able to heal them of their hurts and wounds and reveal himself to them in miraculous ways in visions or dreams.

The team then debriefed and ended the night.

Prayer Requests:
Praise report. A lot of the students have been blessed and have appreciated the music lessons and songs that they have learned thus far. Music theory and singing are not subjects taught in their school and if it is it is usually very elementary and is not as thorough compared to what they have learned from us.
Thanks for the prayers. They do help a lot in supporting the work we are doing here. Amy and Eugene have been feeling a little tired and have a runny nose or scratchy throat. Pray that after a good night rest they will feel energized and refreshed.
Continue to pray that the students will be encouraged to learn the music well and be passionate in their worship to God.

{FECA Vision Choir} Update 2

The rest that we had last night paid off as all of us were able to wake up refreshed and ready for the activities and singing ahead of us. Our day started at 7:30 am with breakfast. We then went to our classrooms and waited until the students arrived. There were 14 of them, an even ratio of boys to girls, with ages ranging from 13 to 25. All the students traveled by train or bus from long distances during he night and arrived at the center this morning. After a short worship time led by Tim Kim, the teachers briefly introduced ourselves. We split the students up by gender. Lily/Amy tested the girls while Eugene/Ernie tested the boys. (Two more girls will join the group tomorrow.)

We showed the students a brief video lesson on proper posture and also on singing with proper tone. Amy taught them beats and measures. We then broke off into gender groups to learn our respective parts to three songs, In His Time, Do Lord, and Lamb of God. Even though the students did not have any formal training in singing, they progressed quickly in learning the notes and were able to sing the songs well. In the coming days we hope that they will become confident enough to sing the songs on their own without the aid of the teachers singing with them in the background.

The weather in Bangalore is hot with temperatures in the 90s and relatively humid. Although the classrooms have a fan and the benefit of the gentle breeze from the windows, it is still quite warm due to being in a concrete building. It is actually cooler outside in the shade. And because of the heat it is easy for the teachers to get tired.

In the mid afternoon, Eugene led a couple of games and icebreakers to help everyone get to know each other better and build on team dynamics. Afterwards, we rested for a couple of hours before dinner. Following dinner, we ended the night with Tim giving his testimony and group devotions. To better prepare the students to share their faith, Tim wants each vocal group to lead the evening sharing time by giving their own testimonies and also sharing a song or a skit if time allows.

After devotions, we ended the night and the teachers debriefed about their day and shared any concerns they had.

Prayer requests:
Health and energy during the day. The days are full so it is easy to get tired and drained from teaching and leading the songs. Amy and Eugene are not feeling well. Pray that they will get a good nights sleep and feel better in the morning.
Pray that the students will have a positive attitude and be encouraged to learn the music and to sing with confidence.

{FECA Vision Choir} Prayer update 1

Just received following update from Ernie.

Greetings Prayer Warriors! Thanks be to God who has prepared us wonderful saints in Christ in getting this team safely to our first layover in Amsterdam, a 10+ hour flight. There are 2 more layovers to go in Saudi Arabia and Oman before we reach our ultimate destination on Sunday, 7:30 am local India time. In total it is a 21+ hour journey in just flight time alone not counting the time spent on layovers. On the plane we were lucky enough to have a row of 4 seats to ourselves. The team spent most of the time sleeping, eating, conversing and getting to know one another, preparing the vocal teaching curriculum, and reviewing the order of songs that we will be teaching in order of difficulty. We are lucky to have 3 people (Lily, Eugene, and Amy) who have varying skills and knowledge in music theory whether it be learned in a university setting, teaching piano or vocal singing. Here is a fun fact. Lily used to teach Ernie in the youth church choir when he attended FEC Glendale.

Getting to Amsterdam was not without its share of surprises though. Ernie, who had another trip to China/Canada (June 6th) following the India trip (May 30th) decided to apply for his China visa on the same week that his flight to India departs. It totally skipped his mind that he would need his passport to fly out of the county on Friday. The consulate officer told him that his visa would be finished and ready for pickup on Monday, May 22nd. So on Friday, May 19th, the day the team was scheduled to fly out to India, Ernie rushed over to the consulate office in Koreatown and waited in line to get his passport pulled. They could either find it and give it to him without the China visa or process the visa for an expedited fee. After waiting in line for 90 minutes, and after much pleading, he finally received his passport and visa and rushed to LAX where he met with the rest of the team for the prayer and send off.

The team finally reached Bangalore, India, Sunday morning at 7:30 am. They were exhausted but pleased to know that all of their luggage arrived safely with them. After going through immigration, they met up with Tim Kim who had arranged for 2 cars to transport them to their housing and accommodations. At the center, we showered and rested up before meeting again for lunch at 1 pm. During lunch, Tim briefed the team on what to expect in the coming days and went over some of the schedule. About 20 students will be bussed in early morning tomorrow. After an early morning service, we will introduce ourselves and do vocal range testing to see where each student's vocal range is. The rest of the day will be spent on vocal training and also introducing them to a few of the songs.

Before dinner tonight, the team will get together to plan for Monday's lesson and forming a daily schedule outline for the rest of the week.

At this time it is 7:30 p and the team will have dinner.

Prayer requests:
Restful sleep and energy for the next day
Productive and fun time connecting with our students as we get to know them and understanding team dynamics
Patience and perseverance in learning the music.
Good weather under 90F.

{FECA Vision Choir} Teaching team safely arrived

The team has arrived safely and had been picked up by Timothy Kim.

In case you did not receive this message posted yesterday, here is what happened on Friday.

Today, Mari Salli, Meiring and Marshall Huang went to see the India teaching team off. The team, Amy, Lily, Ernie and Eugene left, but it was kind of exciting for a while.

This is the email we received about 9 PM Thursday night from Ernie: "Hi Team, I'm just asking for your prayers. I have a China trip that I'm supposed to go on June 6th. And so since I didn't think I had enough time to submit it after I got back I decided to apply this week. But to get the China visa you need to submit your passport and so I did. But in the rush it didn't occur that I needed it this Friday when we go to India. So I need to drive to the Chinese consulate tmrw morning at 9 am to get it back." Immediately, we went into prayer mode and solicited additional prayer warriors.

So Ernie went with his father to the Chinese Embassy early this morning, and there was already a long line, but we were not even sure his passport was still there or maybe it was in the mail already. At 11 AM, after checking in and again praying for Ernie at LAX, we received a text that had had just gotten his passport back and was on his way to LAX. Praise the Lord, Ernie arrived at the airport at 12 noon, was able to check in and so the complete team headed off to security. Continue to pray for them as they arrive about 7 AM Sunday morning (india time).
